What Is a Freedom of Information Request?
The Freedom of Information Act 2000 gives you the right to request any recorded information held by public authorities in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 covers Scottish public authorities. Authorities must respond within 20 working days.
Who Can You Send an FOI Request To?
Any public authority including local councils, government departments, NHS bodies, police forces, schools, universities, and many other public organisations. Private companies are not covered unless they carry out public functions.
Tips for Effective FOI Requests
Be specific about what you want โ vague requests are more likely to be refused as too broad. Include date ranges where relevant. Ask for data in spreadsheet format if you want to analyse numbers. You don't need to explain why you want the information.
What If My Request Is Refused?
If refused, the authority must explain which exemption applies. You can request an internal review, then complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) if unsatisfied. Common exemptions include personal data (Section 40), commercial interests (Section 43), and policy formulation (Section 35).
